"Discerning Truth, Making Judgments": Media Literacy Seminar and Workshop
2024-07-04

To empower students with media literacy, our school participated in the "Talking News and Information with Students and Teachers" program organized by the Hong Kong Press Council. This initiative involved two activities designed to guide students in analyzing, evaluating, and verifying information, ultimately equipping them to become responsible consumers of information and to utilize information technology effectively for a healthy digital life.

School-Wide Lecture: "How to Tell Real News from Fake News?"
The program commenced with a school-wide lecture titled "How to Tell Real News from Fake News?" delivered by Ms. Teresa Chan, Media and Information Literacy Education Coordinator, Hong Kong Press Council. Ms. Chan provided students with insights into the news production process, the characteristics of different media outlets, and strategies for identifying genuine news. Her engaging content sparked lively discussions among students, deepening their understanding of the essence of news information.

S4 Workshop: "Discerning Information Authenticity Workshop"
Following the lecture, a "Discerning Information Authenticity Workshop" was held for S4 students. This hands-on workshop provided students with practical skills in analyzing information, evaluating sources, verifying news authenticity, and developing critical thinking abilities. Students worked in groups to discuss reports from various newspapers and media outlets, applying analytical frameworks to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each piece and suggesting improvements. This activity not only allowed students to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios but also enhanced their learning in the Citizenship and Social Development.
