Encouraged by the success of the first three Plain English Speaking Contests, the English Department of our school organised the Fourth Plain English Speaking Contest 2014-15 on 2 July 2015. The Fourth Plain English Speaking Contest is a public speaking contest for all Junior form students from schools in the New Territories and other government schools. Since the first contest, the scale of the contest has expanded over the years to include all government schools in Hong Kong, and schools in the New Territories this year. Also, in our continued efforts to promote plain English speaking amongst schools, a new category was introduced to include Senior form students in our contest this year. The contest is supported by the English Speaking Union, Hong Kong, and the NET Section, Education Bureau.
The Fourth Plain English Speaking Contest provided an avenue for students to sharpen their speaking skills and build confidence in public presentation, in addition to promoting the personal development of students through the use of clear and effective spoken English. 28 student contestants, representing all Junior form classes, attended a series of 3 training sessions conducted by our school’s NET. Through the training, the contestants learnt both speech writing and delivery techniques. The contestants subsequently put their oratorical skills to the test at the intra-school competition on 21 May 2015.
The Final of the Fourth Plain English Speaking Contest 2014-15 was held successfully on the morning of 2 July 2015 at Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School. This year, we were privileged to have the continued support of our distinguished panel of adjudicators from the English Speaking Union, Hong Kong, and the NET Section, EDB. The panel was presided over by Dr. Verner Bickley, MBE, Chairman of the English Speaking Union, Hong Kong. 17 Junior form finalists and 9 Senior form finalists from 9 schools were locked in an intense neck and neck competition. They delivered rousing speeches that earned the adjudicators’ commendation for the sheer quality and confident delivery of their speeches. The adjudicators were particularly impressed with the quality of the Senior form contestants who had to deliver impromptu speeches.
Po Leung Kuk Tang Yuk Tien College won the coveted Championship and First Runner-up of the contest for Junior form; whilst South Tuen Mun Government Secondary School was the Second Runner-up. For the inaugural Senior form category of the contest, N.T. Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long District Secondary School clinched the Championship, with Queen Elizabeth School and Po Leung Kuk Tang Yuk Tien College winning the First Runner-up and Second Runner-up, respectively. All finalists were certainly winners in their own right that morning - for their spunky performance in the presence of a huge audience, a very distinguished panel of adjudicators; and in English Language to boot.
