Recognising the importance of public speaking in plain English as an important communication skill, the English Department organized the school’s Third Plain English Speaking Intra-School Contest on 3 April 2014. The contest is an intra-school variant of the Third Plain English Speaking Inter-School Contest, the grand final of which will be held on 16 May 2014 at our school. The contest will enjoy the support of the English Speaking Union (ESU) of Hong Kong, and the NET Section, Education Bureau. Contestants from 7 schools across Hong Kong will pit their skills against one another on that day.
The Plain English Speaking Contest was conceived to provide an avenue for students to sharpen their speaking skills and build confidence in public presentation, in addition to promoting the personal development of students through the use of clear and effective spoken English. The Intra-School round saw 26 student contestants, representing all Junior form classes, attending a series of 3 training sessions conducted by the school’s NET. Through the training, the contestants learnt both speech writing and delivery techniques. The contestants subsequently put their skills to the test on 3 April 2014.
All 26 contestants delivered rousing speeches which impressed the adjudicator. Given that it was an inaugural attempt for most of the contestants, all 26 students were indeed winners in their own right in the afternoon of 3 April 2014.
